Tomatoes

Similar to other vegetables in the Solanaceae family, tomatoes grow rapidly with relatively short production cycles. High productivity makes the crop among the most demanding in terms of its instant requirement for nutrients. Therefore, the rate, balance and timing of fertilization are key to successfully satisfying the requirements of tomatoes over the relatively short time frame.

Tomato production varies greatly depending on whether the crop is grown in the open air or under protection. Mineral nutrition and water management must be monitored according to the cropping system and the final destination of the crop (i.e. whether the crop will end up as fresh or processed tomatoes).
